Bicheno is a coastal town on Tasmania’s east coast, set beside rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and the clear waters of Waubs Bay. It lies along the Tasman Highway between Swansea and St Helens and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding coastline and nearby Douglas-Apsley National Park. The town has a working fishing heritage alongside tourism, with a small harbour, seafood businesses, cafés, and accommodation. Bicheno’s compact centre is close to the waterfront, while beaches and rocky headlands provide easy access to the sea and surrounding coastal landscape.

Bicheno has strong Aboriginal connections, with the area traditionally associated with the Oyster Bay Nation of the Palawa people. The town’s name is linked to James Ebenezer Bicheno, who served as Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen’s Land. Fishing and maritime activities became important to the local community, and the town developed around its sheltered coastal setting. The Bicheno Blowhole is one of the area’s best-known natural features and has become closely associated with the town. Local heritage is also reflected in historic buildings and the continuing presence of fishing within the community.

The coastline around Bicheno provides a range of natural attractions. The Bicheno Blowhole sends seawater through a narrow opening in the granite shoreline when conditions are suitable, while nearby Whalers Lookout offers views across Waubs Bay and the surrounding coast. Redbill Beach is a popular swimming and walking area, and Diamond Island is connected to the mainland by a sandy causeway that is exposed at low tide. The nearby Douglas-Apsley National Park protects dry forests, rivers, waterfalls, and walking tracks, providing a contrast to Bicheno’s predominantly coastal environment.

Seafood is an important part of Bicheno’s food culture, reflecting the town’s fishing traditions and access to Tasmania’s east coast waters. Local restaurants and producers feature oysters, abalone, lobster, and other seafood alongside Tasmanian agricultural products. Bicheno is also well known for its little penguin colony, with the world’s smallest penguin species coming ashore after dark along the local coastline. Wildlife tours provide opportunities to observe them without disturbing the birds. The combination of a working fishing community, marine wildlife, distinctive coastal geology, and access to nearby national parks gives Bicheno a clear identity on Tasmania’s east coast.
